consumerism at it's worst...
the apartment complex i live in is four stories and has a trash cute at the end of the hall. over the last few months, i'm amazed at the items i've seen (and recovered) from that room. although there is a sign that says to not leave boxes and large items in the room, people are so lazy as to ignore that sign and leave stuff lying around. in the past few months i've seen a 22" computer monitor, skies, empty cardboard boxes and wine racks. and today, i found two lamps. i couldn't believe it. i brought them back to the apartment and left for a bike ride. when i returned, p had plugged in the taller of the two and it worked just fine, equiped with lightbulbs. i slapped the table lamp together and placed a bulb in and turned it on as well. absolutely nothing wrong with them except someone had decided they weren't good enough for them anymore. amazing.

Back in college, we were in an apartment complex at the end of the school year, and we went to put some trash in the trash chute room...and came back with a bunch of tapes, and a big brown cuddly teddy bear! We kept both, the tapes turned out to be nothing that great, but the bear we've adopted, named him Oxford, and is among our clan of stuffed animals now. He was in perfectly good shape, maybe close to new even! I felt bad for him, how could someone just leave him as trash??!!
Anyway, lamps are a great find! :) free lamps! yay!
Those lamps are great! I agree that it doesn't make sense at all to throw away completely accceptable items. Like Teresa said, you can donate it, sell it, or just give it away to your friends. Do you think that maybe the trash chute is an unofficial "free stuff" area, so people put things there not so much to throw it away, but in hopes that someone else will take it? Then again, they could just as well post a notice and a photo somewhere in the building, saying they have free stuff to give away...
Elaine, I wonder if that perfectly good teddy bear was a gift from an ex-boyfriend, so whoever threw it out just wanted to get rid of stuff that would remind her of him!
