auction at a wedding

On Saturday, 10.23.04, I attended one of P's friend's wedding in Gennesee, just outside of Golden, CO. The chapel was beautiful. The windows behind the altar captured the view of snow capped mountains along the Continental Divide perfectly. After a nice ceremony, it was down to Red Rocks for the reception; again, wonderful views of Red Rocks from the restaurant nestled against the Red Rocks Park.

Possibly the most interesting thing I've ever experienced at a wedding was when time came to give away the garter belt. Instead of the run-of-the-mill 'hey, all the bachelors come to the center of the room' action, they auctioned the garter belt off. No kidding. A full on auction with the 1980 national auctioneer champion leading the show. Incredible. I believe the bidding started at 1000USD - started by one of the CEO's of Chipotle (the bride was employed by the gourmet (fast food) burrito franchise); and, more or less, ended when the father of the groom stepped up, very business-like, and brought the bidding to a halt at 3500 USD. So crazy... never seen anything like it at a wedding - full on auction... even had an assistant working the room to point out who was bidding and to promote higher bids. Crazy.

wow. that must have been some shindig if the attendees can afford to pay thousands of dollars for a garter.

I had the same thought as Eugene - must have been a pretty fancy shindig if people could shell out that kind of money! I also wondered the same thing as Elaine - who got the money? Did they donate it to charity? I mean, I'm sure the bride and groom are wonderful people, but I dunno, it just seems like, when they are already getting lots of wedding gifts and shower gifts, etc., do they need a reception game that just gives them more money? Or was the garter belt really valuable? Like maybe it was diamond-encrusted or something. :)
